The Rolling Stone? The Birth of Stone?

Click to Bigger      Buildings. Streets. The long and winding express way. The construction of an underground tunnel for Bangkok's new subway system.
What do these things have in common? All of them require rocks to build.
Human beings have made use of rocks from time immemorial. Egyptians arranged sandstone slaps into pyramids. Greeks built exquisite sanctuaries for the god from marble while ancient Khmers put one after another stone together and built such a magnificent structure as Angkor Wat.
Closer to us, all those tombstones are made of rock as well.
Click to Bigger      Have you ever wondered where do rock and stone come from? In a year, a massive amount of rock is transported to Bangkok for use as materials for construction projects, large and small. Chon Buri supplies construction rocks for eastern Bangkok. Ratchaburi provides for the west and Saraburi for the north.
But where do these rocks originate? Different forces in nature are at work to create the hard substance we know as rock starting from the movement of magma upto the earth surface, the cooling down and gradual erosion by the sun, wind, water and glacier.
And certainly, it takes time, a long, long time, before a stone is created.
