เมื่อพระองค์ทรงเก็บรวบรวม
โบราณวัตถุ
ที่ทรงพบขณะเสด็จธุดงค์
มณฑลฝ่ายเหนือ
ไปไว้ที่พระที่นั่ง
"ประพาสพิพิธภัณฑ์"
ในพระบรมมหาราชวัง ทว่า
ผู้เขียนคิดว่าเป็นการง่าย
และด่วนสรุปเกินไปที่จะกล่าวเช่นนั้น

| จริงอยู่ว่า
คำ "พิพิธภัณฑ์"
ถือกำเนิดขึ้นเป็นครั้งแรก
ในนามของพระที่นั่ง
"ประพาสพิพิธภัณฑ์"
หากแต่ความหมายของคำก็อาจจะแตกต่างไป
จากที่เราเข้าใจกันในปัจจุบัน
ยิ่งในรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จ
พระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว
เราก็จะพบว่ามีถ้อยคำ
ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับกิจกรรมดังกล่าว
หลากหลายมากขึ้น คือนอกจาก
"พิพิธภัณฑ์" แล้ว
ยังมีการทับศัพท์
คำในภาษาอังกฤษ "มิวเซียม" (Museum)
และ "เอกษบิชัน"(Exhibition)
คำเหล่านี้มีความหมายเหลื่อมซ้อน
และเปลี่ยนแปลงไปมาตลอดเวลากว่าครึ่งศตวรรษ

| Museum: Exposition and Concealment |
| Suddan Wisudthiluck  In Thai, "phiphitthaphan"
is presently translated as a "museum," but in the past, this word had different
shades of meanings. From 1860's-1920's, "phiphitthaphan" could refer to either a
"museum" or an "exposition/exhibition." And it is interesting to note
that "phiphitthaphan" then was usually instituted to mark the rite of passage of
the kings or the kingdom.

| For
example, the "museum" that was first open to public was founded in 1874 to
celebrate King Rama V's coronation. Next in 1882, the National Exhibition was staged in
Phra Meru Ground to commemorate the centennial anniversary of Bangkok and the Chakri
Dynasty. Most items on display in both occasions involved both cultural and natural
objects. They were not much different from things that Siam sent to be put on show in
Western expositions typical of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. |

According to old document, museum visitors in the past generally showed greater attention
to natural objects than cultural ones. In 1898, it was reported that a natural history
section of the Royal Museum drew a larger number of visitors than a cultural section did.
However, after the National Museum was founded in 1926, objects of natural history were
put away and a museum has come to represent merely cultural items, especially those
related to royal or Buddhist history. |
| On the
occasion of Bangkok's bicentennial anniversary in 1982, the new section on modern Thai
history was put in place. Nonetheless, the display was by no means "modern," as
it simply presents modern development of Thailand in the context of its past glory. |
The author of the article
cautioned that a museum is rarely a place for truthful representation of reality.
Therefore, whenever one steps into a museum, one should try not simply to understand what
is on display but to look for its hidden meanings and what is not there as well.
