A Bright
Diary from Khao Nampu "Story by Jira Bunprasop" "Photos by Krisakorn Wongkornwut" |

The eye is an instrument of sight, but this does not mean that only those possessing its
faculty can see the world. Thirty children with varying degrees of blindness from the
Bangkok School for the Blind moved out of their limited world of school and home one
afternoon into an undreamed of experience. The Nature Camp for Underprivileged Youths
organized by the Nature Club at Khao Nampu, Salak Pra National Park in Kanchanaburi
Province allowed the blind children, as well as their sighted guides, to learn about
themselves and their environment. On the Dr. Boonsong Lekakul Nature Trail, in honor of that great Thai conservationist, the group of pre-teens breathed in the fragrance of the forest, listened intently to the wind rippling in the bamboo tops, and "saw" the long smooth stems and the bristly coarse trunk leaves by thoroughly feeling them. The children did not keep wonder inside. What they wanted to know, they asked of their guides. |

Their humor, memory and imagination were revealed each day in bonfire skits, paintings, play dough sculptures, compositions and normal interaction. At several points on hikes there would be narrow streams with steep and gravelly banks to cross or rocky crags to climb. No child complained of the difficulty. They did not waste time grieving for a lost sense but made the best use of whatever other perceptions they had. Perhaps it is us who have lost something if we have deprived ourselves of the ability to observe and appreciate the world with our hearts. |
