Ten to twelve days prior to the official start of the boat races, the participating boats are able to begin practicing in the river. It is necessary at these practices to try to perfect timing and properly organize everyone's positions in the actual boat according to weight, not to mention familiarize oneself with the flow and general feel of the river. Preparations are exhaustive, yet the atmosphere surrounding preparations for the boat races clearly express the willingness, determination and sheer joy with which the locals of Luang Prabang approach the festivities.
